Joyce Alice Roberson Goforth

August 9, 1927 - July 4, 2022

A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bowling with the Rev. Barbara C. Willis officiating. The family invites friends to join them immediately following the service under the pavilion at St. Asaph’s Episcopal Church. 

 Joyce Alice Roberson Goforth, 94, of Bowling Green, Virginia died Monday, July 4, 2022, at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Aubrey Scott Roberson and Golda Fuqua Wheeler. She was born in Lynchburg, Virginia on August 9, 1927. She is survived by her son John Douglas Goforth and his wife Cynthia, their children, Anne Douglas and Zachery Wheeler; her daughter-in-law, Pamela Jean Goforth and her daughter Kristina Elizabeth Brown (Dameon); great grandchildren Mason and Peyton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Douglas Bewley Goforth, her son Christopher Scott Goforth, and her brothers Aubrey Scott Roberson II and Harold Gilbert (Ray) Preas, Sr.  She attended Westhampton College of University of Richmond and graduated from Lynchburg College. She married Douglas Bewley Goforth on August 18, 1951. They moved to Bowling Green, Virginia in 1952. Mrs. Goforth taught 50 years, mostly in Caroline County Public Schools.  She was passionate about teaching, she loved her students and enjoyed keeping in touch with many over the years. She was a life member of the Virginia Education Association.  She also served as an officer of the Dominion Uniserv and was a member of the Caroline Education Association where she served as president numerous terms.  Mrs. Goforth became a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International in 1952.  She was a member of Beta Eta Chapter where she served as President for several terms.  She was recipient of the State Honoring Our Own Award and her special project was the chapter Scholarship fund which she chaired for many years.  Mrs. Goforth was an active member of St. Asaph’s Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the choir, Senior Warden, register, head of the Lay Eucharistic Members, head of the lectors, president of the ECW, alter guild, and a delegate to the annual convention of the Virginia Episcopal Church. She was inducted as a charter member of the Caroline Chapter No. 174 Order of the Eastern Star.  She served many stations during her 63 years of service to include nine times as Worthy Matron.  An avid bridge player, she enjoyed the game but more importantly the friendships she developed over 70 years.   Mrs. Goforth was a charter and Honorary life member of the Caroline Junior Woman’s Club, and their scholarship was named after her.  A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 10 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bowling with the Rev. Barbara C. Willis officiating.
